Rather than consuming tons of protein supplements in replacement of a meal, eating the right kinds of food should be good as well. This should not be the case because people who focus on one body part alone and not on the body as a whole might seem healthy and buff, but inside, they might be suffering some side effects from taking too much supplements or having a weak heart.

Yes, it might be slow and it might take time, but the risk of an unhealthy body is simply too much to pay in gaining muscle mass. Exercise and diet are two different points that should be done equally in gaining muscle mass, one never contradicting the other. Gaining muscle mass should not constitute the amount of muscle seen or admired by others, but the relation of one’s body fat, among other factors.
